Responsibilities of a Dental Therapists Include:
- Dental examinations for both children and adults – assessing oral health, diagnosing common conditions, and planning appropriate treatment.
- Fillings (restorations) in both permanent and baby teeth, helping to restore teeth and prevent further decay.
- Children’s dental care including fluoride applications, fissure sealants, fillings, pulpotomies (nerve treatment on baby teeth), and extractions of baby teeth when needed.
- Placement of preformed stainless-steel crowns on baby teeth using the Hall technique (without drilling).
- Scaling and polishing (hygiene work), and periodontal treatment for gum disease.
- Preventive oral health care — personalised oral hygiene and dietary advice to help prevent dental problems.
- Taking and interpreting dental X-rays, to support diagnosis and treatment planning.
- Administering local anaesthetic to ensure patient comfort during treatments.
- Impressions and shade matching to support restorative treatments.
- Professional tooth whitening treatments (under prescription from a dentist).
- Providing custom-made mouthguards and nightguards to protect against clenching, grinding, or sports injuries.
- Adjusting existing dentures (although not providing new dentures).
- Referring to a dentist if treatment outside their scope is required.
